Did you know….Yosemite was first a California State Park before it was latter transferred to the newly formed Department of Interior, making the Buffalo Soldiers the first protectors of our public lands? We are indebted to their legacy and honor their work. Learn more below….Some of the first park rangers in America weren’t rangers at all. They were Buffalo Soldiers — African Americans who served in the U.S. Army after the Civil War. During Black History Month, we celebrate the legacy of these first-of-a-kind, trailblazers. From 1899 to 1904, Buffalo Soldiers were among the first people to work in Yosemite National Park, Yellowstone National Park, and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks — more than 10 years before the creation of the National Park Service. These dedicated men protected wildlife from poachers, battled wildfires, built trails, and other infrastructure, and forged a proud legacy in our nation’s history. They made these accomplishments despite the added burden of racism and prejudice. We continue to preserve and honor the history of these incredible men at places like Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument. ... See MoreSee Less

With sadness, we share the passing of “Bill” Dewhurst (née Soll). Born in 1924, Bill grew up in the Caretaker's House on the Hellman-Ehrman estate in what is now Sugar Pine Point State Park. Not only were Bill’s parents employees of the Ehrmans, but as a young adult, Bill served as a maid in the main house and resided in the third-floor servants' quarters. Bill and her beloved husband "Dewey" were educators at Tahoe Lake School and became prominent Tahoe community leaders. In 1959, they purchased a lot overlooking their cherished Lake Tahoe on Lakeshore Drive in the new Incline Village development. Bill lived in their humble home until her death earlier this month, just days shy of her 98th birthday. The couple had no children; Bill is survived by a nephew living in Iceland. Her nephew wrote: Bill (Mary Louise Dewhurst) was a very special person in her quiet sort of way. She appreciated nature and took delight in what life had in store for her -- attributes that we would all like to possess. She was certainly among the oldest life-long residents at Lake Tahoe.” Over the years, I took joy in hosting Bill’s visits to her treasured childhood home at Sugar Pine Point SP. Bill’s eyes would light up as she shared stories of growing up on the rugged and remote west shore of Lake Tahoe with few neighbors and the lake as her playground. My favorite of her memories was that of Mary-the-Deer, a domesticated deer that often came to the Caretaker’s House window looking for food and a head scratch. The picture above, and the video below, were created in front of the Caretakers House in 2019. Bill will remain an inspiration to us all. Bill was generous in donating memorabilia and memories from her youth at Sugar Pine Point. We will miss her bright and gentle presence. Heidi Doyle, Executive Director ... See MoreSee Less
