Happy Earth Month!

Written by SSPF Executive Director Heidi Doyle

Happy April! This month, we celebrate the Earth, sun, and moon.

I remember the first Earth Day in 1970 when, as a freshman in high school, the entire school gathered in The Quad to plant a tree.  It was during the previous summer when we first viewed our Blue Planet from the moon’s surface and then were horrified by the nearby oil spill off of the Santa Barbara coast and the Cuyahoga River fires.  For a teen from Southern California, these events created a sense of concern for our future.

Earth Day was created as an annual celebration that raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources for future generations. Now, 54 years later, Earth Day is a time to celebrate the awe of nature, the accomplishments that have been made to reverse centuries of neglect, and raise awareness of what we can do in the future to ensure this place we call “home” will remain a place of health and inspiration.

We have many opportunities in April to celebrate Earth Day.  Join the SSPF Team at the following Earth Day events: Tahoe Truckee Earth Day at Palisades Tahoe on April 20th and South Tahoe Earth Day Festival on April 27th.  We’ll be sharing how we all can recreate responsibly in the parks we love.

On April 6th, we have the opportunity to experience a partial eclipse…a time when the sun, moon, and earth align. My wish is that we can continue to align our efforts to honor Mother Earth and be grateful for the California State Parks at Lake Tahoe that protects 12,042 acres of public lands with the partnership of the Sierra State Parks Foundation.

Happy Earth Month!
