During the winter of 2012, a fierce storm severely damaged the historic marine railing system at the South Boathouse. In addition, damage to the retaining wall and 1903 building has caused closure of the building and the relocation of the vessel, Mercury. Because of the generosity of our donors, we have completed the engineering plans, obtained the five required permits and have have begun the repairs of the boathouse in October 2016.
Sierra State Parks Foundation is looking towards the removal and replacement of the rail system once work is allowed, by TRPA, to be started in August 2017. We have already purchased the rails and are waiting to raise $30,000 to get the contract signed.
In addition to the repair of the boathouse and the replacement of the historic marine rail system, this project also includes an exterior interpretive panels net to the boathouse where an original piece will be on view. Inside the boathouse, we will provide an improved viewing platform for the Mercury and hope to be able to provide our most generous donors the “ride of your life” on one of the fastest boats ever to be on the Big Blue!
Funds are now being sought for the repairs of the rail system and return of the Mercury. Help us, “Save the Rails”!
