Medieval knights on the coast of California? It’s not as odd as it may sound! In an immensely popular 16th century Spanish novel “Adventures of Amadis,” a group of knights sailed to the New World, battled fearsome griffins, and met a legendary warrior-queen named Calafia. When Spanish explorers reached uncharted land on the Pacific coast, they thought they had found that mythical land, so they called it by a version of her name: California.
This summer, knights in armor return to California as Scott Farrell and Loreen Mattis, of San Diego’s Chivalry Today Educational Program present “California Knights” as part of the Sierra Speaker Series. In this talk, Scott and Loreen will explore the history, function, and fashion of armor in the Middle Ages, with a selection of replica pieces for attendees to see and handle. Learn more about the world of medieval sword combat, from the 15th-century fighting manuals to the fight choreography of fantasy epics like Game of Thrones, to the revival of historical fencing as a modern sports competition. Come and celebrate the great tradition of Californian knights in armor!
